The sites went down again yesterday due to bandwidth spikes caused by a Russian site that links directly to the files (309GB in one day). This is not the first time this has happened, so we've had no choice but to implement a password to allow file downloads from the main site.

Code:
name: wearwolf
pass: waoooon

It will be changed as needed (i.e., once it proliferates to the sites that have somehow gotten around the hotlinking block)

If this happens once too often, I may just look into another way to host the files or something.

Major Kudos to D for helping me fix up the site at 4 in the AM in his neck of the woods.

Reply to this thread if it fucks up again so we can fix it. Thanks!

God, I can't believe that worked.

Keep an eye on the bandwidth. Let's see what happens after a week.

Could you tell me this site address? Maybe I'll try to contact its owner.

Hatsuyuki: sure. That would be greatly appreciated. Note that this happened in late November, as well, same source.

mainly the first 2 links, the third is probably not a hotlinker. EDIT - note that files were not being linked directly there, but the directories were, facilitating the leechers

http://thepaladin.ucoz.ru/forum/2-143-1   maybe this one too

Eric: Don't jump to conclusions on that. I just meant that it seemed to explain why the porn spam was from Russia, given links to each time capsule were posted on a Russian site. The spider that hit all those files could never have defaced them were it not for gaping holes in Servage security.

There are Chinese, Thai and Vietnamese sites directing people straight to Wiki pages and saying "click this link."

Honestly it's better that these files get locked down anyway. It will drive more people to the forum wondering why, and totally eliminate casual linkers and people being directed to a page to "click here for files."

I don't see why we owe the effort of tracking down and archiving all that stuff to people who have no interest in the community.

Also, I know you said the bulk of the hammering came from Russia, but I have to question that. My server keeps much better logs than Sevage, and I find traffic-wise the bulk of IPs fall into a range too difficult to classify. Usually "unknown country" comes first. It's possible Servage is lumping things into Russia.

Regardless of this, 0.3 TB in one day is fucking insane when we've had trouble getting even 3 posts per day in the forum. Something is very fishy, and locking it all is the best option until we can sort it out.

Aye, but the sites in question are the ones eating up the bulk. The bandwidth usage from russia is second only to U.S.

OK, I'm sorry that I've linked to each Time Capsule in my FAQ. However, I don't think that it is the reason why the bandwidth limit was exceeded so many times.
I'll ask the site admin to remove http://elsallia.com/Games/Games and http://elsallia.com/binary/

http://thepaladin.ucoz.ru/forum/2-1-9 On this page user said that he had downloaded music from your site and asked how to play it. I'll remove the link.

If there are so many leechers, maybe a torrent system could be salvation?

Hatsuyuki: I'm disinclined to agree with EricKei on this. People linking to Web pages should not be an issue. After all, Google indexes those same exact pages. I don't really think those links are a big deal.

I think his point was that in his referrer logs those pages turned up a lot. the failure of Servage is that it doesn't tell WHERE people from that link were going. It's possible that much of the people who followed those links here are what we should consider legitimate traffic.

Honestly, pointing to specific URLs that are obviously not direct-linking files is really grasping at straws. We don't have any facts to back up or disprove any accusation.

I think locking the files like this is the best option, because it will stop the hammering and drive away casual clickers. People who want the files will be forced to come to the forum and find out how to get them, and that's fine by me. Maybe we can even add something so to see the password they have to post 5 times.

I'm open to ideas.

The torrent idea looks good. For now I wouldn't, but surely are there enough seeders around here?

People regularly post messages like "I've downloaded Langrisser 3/4/5. Where can I get English translation patch?" on our forum. Maybe someone should make a huge banner saying "It's only in Japanese, bastard! Don't waste bandwidth in vain" Undecided

I heard about web seeding feature. AFAIK it allows to download from an HTTP source and other peers simultaneously. Perhaps download speed from an HTTP source can be limited. Unfortunately, I've never tried this feature myself.

well i suppose thats becos there are lots of hopefuls who wish for them to be translated, i mean im chinese and i was absolutely freaking out to discover a chinese version of Lang 3 on the net and had to absolutely dl it. Unfortunately due to it being a pc version the gameplay absolutely sux which was the main reason i went back and started playing the old jap versions of saturn and playstation 2.

Anyway, it does appear to be a gd idea to request logins and pws b4 dling the stuff available though it would be easier if it was stated on the sites that the pws are available in the forums.

The problem with BT is seeding. If the seeds die, a lot of servers drop the torrent from their index. This is what happened to my Linux for Loongson torrent. Even if you tried to reseed, it always returned an unrecognized torrent error.

We do not have anywhere near enough people to keep up seeding, and it's ridiculous to expect that our casual-click downloaders who delete/forget about everything when they realize the Japanese games are in Japanese will ever help to carry the seeding burden.

I have removed direct links to your website, there are only links to http://elsallia.com/ now. I hope this helps if it was the cause of this problem.
